PLEASE READ **Site Upgrades**

#0, by matrixone05, 15 January 2009 02:50 AM
Somebody here at Lefora has been hard at work on a new posting editor that combines the two different editors into one and adds a few new features.

Here's a sneak preview of it below.  They great thing about Lefora compared to other forum software, is we can upgrade your forum automatically for free, you don't have to do a thing!  Sometime on Jan 15th, you'll see the new posting editor in your forum.

Here's everything that comes with your new editor:
  • Formating options: Bold, italics, underline, different fonts, paragraph alignment, bullets
  • An undo button
  • BBcode support - basic tags (b,i,u,url,img,quote,code)
  • Ability to highlight a word and make it an html link
  • Buttons for inserting images and embedding video
  • Auto-detection within a post of image URLs and youtube video URLs.  Just paste the link in your post and hit <ENTER> or <SPACE> for us to auto-detect it - a menu will appear at the bottom with choices.
  • Emoticons
  • File upload button (at the bottom, takes images, videos, mp3s, whatever)
  • Not losing images and videos when you go back to 'edit' a post

Note: one item that doesn't exist just yet, but we'll have soon, is the ability to autodectect and embed youtube videos and flickr photos just by their URL, we'll have that back soon though.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Some common questions:
Does the new editor support emoticons?
Yes, we'll have a few emoticons initially, and we'll be offering a premium service where admins can upgrade their emoticon packs

Why does the new editor not do X (where X is some feature)?
We tried to implement the features that 95% of members use while posting.  If there's a certain feature that was left out, it was to simplify the posting editor for all members; and to trim it down on the back-end so that we could make upgrades to it in the future.  We'll continue to listen to feedback in case there is a high demand for something we left out.

Will I be able to switch back to the old editors?
No and why would you want to Tongue out Each of the old editors had their downfalls and made it very difficult for us to maintain and add features to them.  We'll now have just one editor that we can continue improving and adding features to.  The two editors also caused lots of confusion to new people on lefora.

---
Known Issues: (that we'll fix)
  • If you put a lot of blank new lines between paragraphs (carriage returns), they will be condensed into one line.  You could put <spaces> on those lines to avoid this.
  • Mixed formatting on quoted posts may produce unexpected results.

---
Remember: As with any change, some people love it, some people hate it.  If you're unhappy with this new editor, please post specifically what you don't like or what's confusing to you - we'll listen to that feedback and make improvements.  Please don't post generic "i don't like it" comments as those are not helpful for us to understand what you like and don't like - they will just be deleted.

Me too Panther. I asked for them a while ago.

They work really hard at updating the forum and considering how responsive they are, its amazing its a free site.  There's more they are working on... and so far the changes are really good.

Dance, regarding the photo uploads in the messages...
I put in a request for them to restore that feature.

*UPDATE FROM SUPPORT*
.
.
"Hey everybody, I can confirm there is a problem with the image server; Basically it's not serving.
Anyway all uploaded images should still be there, no data is lost, its just it currently wont let people view them.
Please bare with us, it's the weekend, so getting the hold of the required people to fix this isn't so straight forward as we use an external network for hosting these images. We're on it, and let me state again nothing should be lost, once its fixed any uploaded content should just pop back into your forums.
Sorry for the wait. "

Tutorial - Using the Lefora Text Editor for posting

Go to full article

Lefora has a pretty sophisticated posting editor compared to other forum software and group offerings.  There are a number of features you'll find here on Lefora that you may not have seen other places, such as the detection and auto-embedding of youtube videos just by pasting a link to the video in questions.
Basic Features:

The editor features standard text formating functions, such as font style and alignment, as well as an undo button; these are accessible from the left-hand section of the toolbar.
  • Bold, Italics, and Underline
  • A font selector
  • Left and Center paragraph alignments
  • A bulleted list
  • An 'undo' button
Advanced Features:

The right side has some more advanced features:
  • www link : this will link a word or phrase to a url.
  • Insert image:  Adds an image from a url to your post.  Paste the URL to the image in the box and click on the green button.  Certain web browsers will let you resize the image by dragging the corners.
  • Embed Flash (and videos): Paste your video or flash embed code in the box, click the button and a placeholder image will appear in your editor. You can move this placeholder around and even resize it if your browser allows.  When you submit your post the video or flash object will replace the image, at whatever position and size you set it.
  • Emoticons: Just click an emoticon in the panel that appears to add it to your post.  We'll be expanding the emoticon library sometime in February or March of '09.
Automatic Functions:
  • Auto Hyperlinking: If the editor finds a url like http://www.example.com it will automatically make it a clickable link.
  • Auto Image Detection: If the editor finds a url of an image it will automatically display that image in the post where the url originally was. An option to disable this will be displayed at the bottom of the editor when it detects such a link.
  • Auto Youtube Video Detection: If the editor finds the url of a youtube video it will display the video in the post the same way as for images, similarly an option will be presented to disable the function. If you have the full flash embed code, use the '<> Embed Flash' button.

File Uploads & Attachments:
You can upload images, videos, music, documents, zip files, ... - anything you want to your post.  Uploaded photos will automatically be displayed at the bottom of the post.  Other file types may just be listed as an 'attachment' on the post and prompt the user to download the attachment when they click on it.  Your forum has over 4GB of storage space completely for free, individual files are limited to 20MB each.

Matrix, when I try to go back and edit what I've just posted (ya know, the 15 minutes I have before the post remains like that unless you delete it or something) the format changes - the editor no longer recognizes breaks and sometimes doesn't recognizes spaces (by putting words together). Is this something they can fix? It seems the more I try to edit something the more messed up it becomes.

They know its a problem... annoying...
I have been putting a period on the line that should be blank
.
like above. They have many glitches that they evidently didn't notice prior to the upgrade.
.
I've put in several comments about bugs... keep them coming... I am passing them along.

Matrix, you can change my status back. At this point I guess we all have to wait until they fix the problems.
