A humble suggestion to my friends re: Facebook's Terms of Use

#0, by reflective, 17 February 2009 06:10 PM

I began experimenting Facebook a few weeks ago. Since I have seen a few other group members mention Facebook also I submit the following for other users' consideration.  Actually I wrote this just a few minutes ago particularly with my existing and future Facebook friends in mind.
Harambee,
==========
I have really been enjoying seeing photos and reading about friends and their families during these first few weeks of experience with Facebook! :)
.
That being said, I do humbly suggest to my friends being aware of Facebook's Terms of Use about the content that you use at this site.
.
A hyperlink to Facebook's Terms of Use appears at the bottom of each page that your browser receives from Facebook's servers (so far as I can tell). Scroll any page all the way toward the bottom and look for the word 'Terms' toward the right.
.
I suggest looking over the 'Licenses' section in particular (about halfway down that page). The most current revision of the Terms of Use as I write this note (dated Feb.4.2009) basically says that you as a Facebook user grant Facebook free license to do pretty much whatever they please with whatever you upload to the site.
.
Although I don't have any particular reason at this point in time to think that Facebook is up to anything particularly sinister, I suppose that a general sense of skepticism I have developed from studying companies over time suggests caution. And that is all this note is about... simply sharing that thought with you.
.
In any case I do look forward to keeping in touch with you :)

You actually read the terms of use. You never cease to amaze me.

Facebook has changed the Terms of Use page hyperlinked at the page bottoms just in the past 36 hours since I published this note, which now shows an apparently previous Terms of Use revision dated Sep.23.2008. In this Sep.23.2008 revision the terms that I pointed out above in this note appear in the 'User Content Posted on the Site' section about 1/3 of the way down. I'm not quite sure what Facebook is doing with the Terms of Use. In any case I still suggest the same general caution.

Yeah... I guess my tendency to actually read stuff surprises people sometimes. I'm kind of quirky like that I guess. What I really need to do is figure out how to get that quirk to bring me some income smile

I didn't read the terms when I joined.  I did hear about the revised version this morning on the news...

Ya know, what I find ironic about this is after I read this I checked out Facebook and they mentioned they were having problems with their terms and that they were going to revert back to the previous terms until everything was figured out.

I have a facebook page, but I don't even know if it has a picture. I pretty much never sign in on it.
My kids hang out on facebook. They preferred it was available only to students... oh well...

Yeah, I heard about it too.  The changed the terms back to the original ones, but the original ones pretty much say the same thing.

So should we start exchanging facebook pages now too?  grin

Hmm ... that may be a good idea. But if we do that you know we have to do MySpace as well. And then the next question will be when will we get sick of each other. LOL.

For anyone that may be paying attention to such life-critical matters *chuckling* Facebook apparently adopted a new "Statement of Rights and Responsibilities" today which is what now appears when you hit the Terms hyperlink at the page bottoms on the right. They've clearly made an effort to make this more readable than the previous Terms of Use, so don't be put off by it. I suggest being familiar at least with section 2. Sharing Your Content and Information and the Privacy Policy. As before, I still look forward to keeping in touch in whatever way you choose to use Facebook :)
