Tony Porter: A call to men

#0, by matrixone05, 16 December 2010 04:29 AM

This was posted elsewhere and I thought it was too important not to share. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere: Don't "act like a man." Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the "man box."

Tony Porter is an educator and activist who is internationally recognized for his effort to end violence against women.   Why you should listen to him:

Tony Porter is the visionary and co-founder behind the nonprofit A Call to Men: The National Association of Men and Women Committed to Ending Violence Against Women. Porter’s message of engagement and self-examination has connected powerfully with numerous domestic and sexual violence programs for such high-profile groups as the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, and colleges and universities around the country, including the US Military Academy at West Point and the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Porter is also an international lecturer for the U.S. State Department, having done extensive work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He is a faculty member of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services Academy of Addiction Studies, where he co-authored their curriculum for clinicians who work with chemically dependent African-Americans. He also specializes in developing social justice models for human service organizations.

"Ted Bunch and Tony Porter shared their expertise in riveting testimony about men’s responsibility for ending violence against women, and they challenged well-meaning men to become part of the solution. The men spoke of their own journeys in understanding that domestic violence is a civil rights issue."

I have no issues with this. A mam has to be a man. And being the head of the home he must be wise in his ways, for what he does effects not only the children but his children.

because teaching a man not to cry doesnt DIRECTLY means he beats women, doesnt mean he cheats, doesnt mean he treat women as a possessions

if anything teaching him not to cry and DEAL with the issues directly solves a lot of problems

i mean who wants to talk or deal with a person thats boo hoo'n...crying so hard they can hardly speak

B/S

MEN dont cry.....MEN solve a problem....let the women cry and feel better about themselves (generalization)

like i told someone before....crying about a problem is like drinking.....they both make you look messy, look stupid, make you feel better, and once you're done with them the problem is still there

For me I can identify with the speaker on many points that he was making. From the crying to the womanizing and most of the inbetween.

I understand that

but what is the direct relationship between crying and womanizing?????

coz u cry doesnt mean you wont go woman to woman

because you dont cry doesnt mean you wont go woman to woman

dude gave a small part of a bigger problem and is making a living on it

Me identifyimg:
When he spoke about his son crying and him telling the boy to stop crying and act like a man. I lived that. (Long story).

When he spoke about the boy calling him up to get him some from this girl, and then his friends to get them? I been there to, That's when a woman or girl was then treated like a garden tool just to take it alittle further.
And yes ma brother I done did that.

In a nutshell.. I think he is not telling men to be weaker... but more humane... That just because one is a man doesn't make it right... nor does it make it wrong if you have and show emotion....

He is put'n together crying with treat'n women like whores

he connected the 2 like one leads to another.....let one MAY lead to another

and I'm saying NOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYYY....one doesnt lead to another....there are so many other factors that lead to those behaviors and telling boys/men not to cry wont change a thing

I tell mine dont cry unless its real.....it better be a SERVE pain

@romie
I understand that those things happen but cause your dad told you not to cry didnt result in you being in that room with that girl

I just think he should have explained it better.....not just go with "MEN DONT CRY" thing.

I want to first say my apology for not writing a full thought down. To many ppl tell me it's to much, so I'm trying to keep it short and simple.
Next for our lady friends us men are not as simple as we like to say.
Us as men fight many wars or battles, physical and mental. We are taught to be strong, to control and be in control. To rule, to achieve, in short to be the best at everything. That's including being the best lover. The thinking is When guys maintain a relationship with more then one woman he's a better man. Like he's THE MAN!
Is this a fact? Is he a better man for this? Do you know men that's not related to you that is satisfied with just one woman and if you do how is he treated? Let's guess like a wimp, soft, punk, p wiped. Can you see the connection? All these little stigmas if I'm using that word right is placed on us as men.
I don't think I used that word right ......

Oh well I'm out time to recharge the phone.

I think being that he probably was press for time so he had to shorten his lecture. Leaving gaps forcing us to fill it with our own experience.

thats what the best swindlers do (not saying he is up to no good) but the best way to lie is to give a person a lil info and allow that person to fill in the rest with their own thoughts and judgments

Why do you think he's up to no good? Is it because you can't see these things happen in your life? You got me there.
