Dark Girls

#0, by matrixone05, 28 May 2011 04:36 AM

Amazing how life is... I hated being light skinned growing up and wanted my kids to be the color of the people in this documentary.... so no one would ever question their ethnicity. I caught hell being the yellow girl with long hair... and it took me until high school to become comfortable in my skin and to not care if others didn't like it... but, I have always loved the beauty and richness of dark skinned tones.

That was beautiful ... although also sad. I don't consider myself light or dark. I think I fit in the middle, so, thankfully, I've never had those color issues. Now I've had the hair issues ... being picked on growing up because my hair was longer than the other girls around me. When I decided to go natural last year and decided to do the big chop last May because I didn't want to go through that transitioning period in the hot heat of the summer, I did have a little backlash. I could definitely tell who liked my hair and who didn't, but I knew when I decided to go natural that I had to do it for the right reasons or I'd quickly fold if I didn't stand firm.

Watching this is sad. The girl who said she thought her skin was dirt sticks with me. It is so sad to see someone have to deal with something like that and to know that their support system - friends and family - are contributing to it. *sigh*

Lastly, I'd like to find that guy who said he doesn't like dark skinned women because they look "funny" beside him ... and then kick his ass. Enough said.

Really? *shocked* Just because it isn't an issue to you doesn't mean it wasn't a major issue to someone else.

I agree Panther. Its a major issue in our community and the basis of many lack of self esteem issues for your girls... who grow up to be your women...

but whats a major issue to me isn't a major issue to you

what I'm getting at is how major is it really???

you mean ppl are die'n because of this???

or is it ppl got hurt feelings????

its not a MAJOR issue............it really isnt.............this isnt gonna get blks employed...........this isnt gonna get more blk males away from THUG LIFE..............this isnt gonna help our community come back together........this isnt gonna get blks better educated...........this isn't gonna solve any of the problems blks face

so to me it isn't a major issue

I'm sure ppl have had "DARK vs LIGHT" problems.......i had it.........but put'n it in a film isnt gonna change a thang

did "Good Hair" stop blk women from get'n perms??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the issue with hair is still here today.........so i guess another film to show how blks cant get along with each other

How can you be sure that this won't correct some of the issues we have in our community? If every person thought that their issue wasn't major enough to make a change and decided not to be proactive then we wouldn't get anything done. That type of thinking defeats a person before they even set anything into motion. That thinking is also short sighted.

You don't know how many people were enlightened from the Good Hair movie. You don't know how many relationships may have been mended or how many women learned to separate their hair from their identity and/or love themselves.

Just because you can't see the change doesn't mean things can't or won't change.

I don't know of any form of change... that did not first require a recognition of a problem.

on my list of issues this isnt even in the top 10

1- strong black communities
2- black employment
3- black education
4- black family
5- black  images
6-10 black health

most of these things are connected

and skin color and hair isnt that big

who cares how your hair looks like if you are uneducated and unemployed

who cares how dark your skin is if you think every blk man is worthless

who cares how good/or not your hair is if you cant let your kids play outside

lets tackle some REAL ISSUES

and put these bs issues to rest

Furthermore, in order for us to have a strong black community we must come together. We must learn to respect and appreciate each other for our differences and individuality. How we perceive ourselves directly correlates to how we perceive each other. Therefore, you can't imply that someone's self image isn't important when your number one issue is "strong black community." How can we be strong together if we're weak alone?!?

#5 includes hair and skin color for many.... if you don't think Black Image is comprised of SELF image.... or lack thereof.... I don't know how you miss it. More fights, arguments, shootings.... deaths.... are based off of image. We are who we see in that mirror.

I tend to agree... just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't real or crucial to someone else...
My skin color and hair were very big issues for me growing up... I learned to embrace me, but everyone does not.
It took a lot to get to that point and the outside factors that contributed to my lack of loving me were strong.
Other people's perceptions of who I was.... was based on what I looked like on the outside, so when I tell you that I literally fought every day until I got to high school that is not a figure of speech...

Children are harsh and cruel... we see it play out frequently in the news when someone shoots up a school because of the treatment they received.... not everyone becomes stronger because of what they deal with.

where did i Belittle anyone???

because i dont think SKIN COLOR is a major issue doesnt mean I'm belittle'n those who think it is

I havent seen the movie..........prolly wont..........but if this movie just exposes the problem without coming with some solutions then whats the point

thats like ppl who always complain but NEVER have a solution to their complaints

First, not everybody in the black community knows there is a problem. Some people do out or the norm things and think it is normal because that is the environment they live in and all they know. Examples such as the young black man with 26 kids who is only 31 years old, or the young black woman with 12 children by 12 different men who is 28 years old, or the boys who tease and pick on the smart black boys for being smart, or the girl who bleaches her skin with dangerous chemicals. Do they know these are issues or something is wrong? There needs to be a total re-education of the black community. Now where do we start? At home, because we have half a generation that I believe is lost because the older generation did not teach them. Why? In my opinion it all starts with the man. If he fails, leaves, the family fails. That does not mean we stop trying, regardless of how hopeless it seems or that things seem to be getting worse instead of better. Left uncheck, un resolved, small issues grow into MAJOR ones. You are right in that we need answers and solutions, but that in itself is an issue because there are not enough black people willing to make the necessary sacrifices to solve our problems. We're to busy doing other things that we think are more important or we'd rather let someone else solve our issues by building more jails and prisons and abortion clinics, making movies and documentaries about them.
